Mobile phone recycling is a process by which a phone owner can take their old mobile phone and take them to a recycling facility. Since so many users switch phones regularly often, the disposal of cell phone has become an increasing issue. Many cell phone users do not know that their phones may be recyclable, so they simply toss them in the trash, which contributes to the increasing issue of expanding landfills. In the United States, some areas have regulations regarding the issue of mobile phone recycling, as there can be chemicals and processes used in the manufacture of these phones that can be dangerous. Other nations have laws regarding mobile phone recycling that requires manufacturers to take responsibility for the recyclability of these products, through what is known as an Extended Producer Responsibility policy. Under these sorts of systems, manufacturers are encouraged to use environmentally-friendly materials and the implementation of reuse, recycling and buy-back programs.
